Green Youth Network’s Prelude to the Green Youth Indaba

The Green Youth Network (GYN) will be hosting the Green Youth Careers Expo, a prelude event to the Green Youth Indaba, scheduled for 11 June 2024. This event will dive into green career paths, skill development, and entrepreneurship within the green economy, in alignment with GYN’s mission to promote sustainable skills development among South African youth. The event will also engage students from four local schools: Phezulu High School, Intwenhle High School, Intakemazolo Secondary School and Umbelebele High School.

The event will include a keynote address which will emphasise the critical role of green careers in driving sustainable economic growth and the importance of equipping youth with the necessary skills to thrive in these fields.

The first panel discussion, titled Exploring Green Career Paths, will feature insights from professionals in various environmental sectors. Panellists will share their career journeys and the impact of their work on environmental sustainability.

A segment on community engagement and public awareness will follow, highlighting the importance of recycling and community involvement in environmental conservation.

The second panel discussion, Skills and Qualifications for Green Jobs, will include representatives from various Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs). This discussion will focus on the qualifications and skills needed for careers in the green sector and the available support from SETAs.

The event will continue with a presentation on the importance of effective ecosystem planning and restoration to support regulatory compliance. This will be followed by an informative session on gaining practical experience through a graduate program.

Lastly, there will be a final panel discussion on Entrepreneurship in the Green Economy, which will feature industry leaders who will discuss the opportunities and challenges of green entrepreneurship, emphasising innovation and sustainable business practices. This prelude event sets the stage for the Green Youth Indaba scheduled for 13-14 June 2024 at the Durban Exhibition Centre, encouraging a deeper understanding of green careers and the significant role young South Africans can play in building a sustainable future. It exemplifies GYN’s dedication to empowering youth and advancing South Africa’s green economy through education, skills development, and entrepreneurship. The insights and discussions from this event are expected to inspire and guide participants as they prepare for the main Indaba.
