The Green Youth Indaba 2024, a hub of innovation, sustainability, and youthful energy, witnessed the convergence of young leaders and changemakers from across the nation. Among the vibrant attendees were two inspiring 18-year-olds from St. Francis College, whose enthusiasm and dreams offer a glimpse into the bright future of our youth.

Siphumelele Nzimande: A Future Mining Geologist and Businesswoman

Siphumelele Nzimande radiated excitement as she shared her experiences from the Indaba. “The Green Youth Indaba Program has been a very fruitful one,” she began, her eyes lighting up. “I met a lot of people, made friends, and lastly, I met my role model, Ayanda Mageba.”
Mageba, known for her contributions to sustainable mining practices, has clearly left a lasting impression on Siphumelele. “When I grow up, I want to be a mining geologist and a businesswoman,” she declared with confidence. Her passion for geology and business showcases the diverse aspirations that the Green Youth Indaba nurtures, encouraging young minds to think beyond conventional paths and envision a future where sustainability and entrepreneurship go hand in hand.

Nongcebo Hlambisa: Aspiring Medical Doctor Specializing in Surgery

Nongcebo Hlambisa, Siphumelele’s fellow student at St. Francis College, shared her excitement about attending the Indaba. “I am so excited. My visit to The Green Youth Indaba has been very beneficial. I have learnt a lot,” she said, her enthusiasm palpable.

Nongcebo’s dreams are set in the medical field. “When I grow up, I want to be a medical doctor, specializing in surgery,” she revealed. Her ambition to become a surgeon underscores the Indaba’s impact in broadening young people’s horizons, demonstrating that sustainability is relevant across various fields, including healthcare.

A Teacher’s Perspective: Sbongimpilo Mdabe

As our conversation with the students progressed, their Geography teacher, Sbongimpilo Mdabe, joined us to fetch them for their school talk. He shared his perspective on the importance of events like the Green Youth Indaba. “It’s incredible to see our students so inspired and motivated. The exposure they gain here is invaluable. It’s not just about learning; it’s about seeing real-world applications of what we teach in school,” he remarked.
